International Women's Day

Chapter 8

International Women’s Day is commemorated annually on the 8th of March. It is a day to celebrate all of women’s achievements, whether they be economic, political, social, or cultural. It is also a great way to spread awareness about gender equality, gender-based violence, and gender-based access to new opportunities!

There are many things you could perform on IWD to raise awareness and help out with gender equality! You could join a campaign, donate to a women-focused charity, educate others, celebrate women’s achievements… Or you could just express gratitude to your mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin, whoever, for all their positive contributions to your life!

Now, to end the chapter, let’s move on to some fun facts, shall we?

FUN FACT 1: IWD originated in 1911. Yes, it’s been quite a while since society has been fighting for women’s rights, but we need to KEEP fighting, considering that sexism is still out there.

FUN FACT 2: The colours purple, green, and white symbolise IWD.

“Purple signifies justice and dignity, and being loyal to the cause. Green symbolizes hope. White represents purity, albeit a controversial concept. The colors originated from the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the UK in 1908.” (Source: https://www.internationalwomensday.com/About)

FUN FACT 3: Every year, IWD focuses on a certain theme. This year’s theme is “For All Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” This emphasises the importance of equal rights, equal power, and equal opportunities for all. It’s also a call to action to march forward and make a difference!

REMEMBER, EVERYONE DESERVES THE SAME RIGHTS AND RESPECT, REGARDLESS OF GENDER. HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY, EVERYONE!
