Chapter 5
~ It was a foggy morning, a spooky one. I waited outside of the museum for fifteen minutes! I have to teach Mr. Scott how to be on time. After a few more minutes a man emerged from the fog. “Sorry, Sorry. Sorry that I am late… I..” he said apologetically. “It is okay but next time please be on time.” “Where’s your dog?” “Oh, he is in the hotel. They don’t allow dogs in a museum, even if it is detective work.” I said sadly. When we both walked in the door we were greeted by the custodian. “Good morning, here for the investigation? Greek mythology is down the hall.” “Wow, news gets around here pretty fast or is it just me?” I whispered to Scott. “No it isn’t just you. I sometimes wonder if it is the reporters who are spreading gossip.” Walking into the greek mythology room, the room was astray. Everything was thrown everywhere. It was in complete disarray. “What happened, here?” I said quizzically. “The mythical beast happened,” Scott said as he pointed to red graffiti that spelled, “The Mythical Beast”. “Okay, Scott, was there anything taken from the museum?” I said while taking out my pad of paper. “Yes, it was said that 9 paintings have been stolen. But each before each murder.” “Weird. What were the names of each victim?” Looking at his groupings of newspapers, he said, “You have Sciron, Achilles, Hercules, Sisyphus, Prometheus, Marsyas, Erysichthon, Arachne, and Atlas. But these are all greek mythology names.” “Exactly. But the paintings that were stolen…” “Demonstrated exactly what happened to each one of those greek people. By george. Elizabeth you are a genius!” “Aw. Scott you helped a lot too. Ok, so we know that each person died in the way that the greek people died in the paintings. Right?” “Right!” “But does that mean that each person matched their personality too? Wait. What about the jewels in the car?” “According to the past newspapers online, a man named Paul Hill burglarized a jewelry shop but is said to be falsely accused. At the end of his trial, Paul was not guilty of the crime. He got away freely!” “Hey, I remember something from my mythology class back in college. Sciron was a thief. Just like Paul Hill. He stole from others and bribed people to wash his feet. When the people were facing towards him and not the cliff, he would kick them off the cliff so that his turtle pet would eat them. But Theseus came by and kicked him off the cliff.” Both of us were dumbfounded. “This is suddenly all making sense. One of the paintings that was stolen was the painting of Sciron. But how can we prevent these deaths from happening?” “It seems like this mythical beast does not like injustice like me but he is becoming too obsessed… Wait, I have an idea. What was the last painting that was stolen from here?” “Um, the newspaper says that the painting of Narcissus has been stolen. That means that someone will die like he did next. But who.” “Narcissus was a man who fell in love with himself. He felt that no one should have him since he was so handsome so he kills himself by drowning. But who would be in love with himself?” “Or herself. Do we need to watch the ocean or a river?” “No, it seems like the Mythical Beast would make it harder than that. Hey, can you contact the Coast Guard and make them aware of the next plan. Meet me in front of the museum at 2:00 later to discuss what I have found.” “Found?” “Yes, I’m going to go get Toby and bring him in here to sniff out some clues.”
