Chapter 38

Hengist Rawkes was a wizard who lived in the early twentieth century. Rawkes descended from a long line of winged horse breeders. His family specifically bred Granian horses for races. Rawkes, however, never saw the appeal in breeding magical creatures, much less horses. He is thought to be the descendant of Hengist and Horsa, the first Germanic settlers of Britain who migrated off the continent in the fifth century. It wasn’t until he attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that he took up an interest in administration and law when he became the Gryffindor Prefect and later Head Boy. After graduating, Rawkes took a job in the Ministry of Magic, specifically in the International Magical Office of Law division. He had his portrait painted in his mid-thirties, and requested that it be hung at Hogwarts when he died. This request was honored due to Rawkes being good friends and former classmates with Mordicus Egg, who eventually became the headmaster of Hogwarts.
His portrait currently hangs near the portrait of Count Hosp of Tyrol, an Austrian count and wizard, near the first-floor landing of the Grand Staircase. He is an easy portrait to find due to his name appearing on a plaque below the portrait. Hengist is often seen in his own portrait, posing for students, or speaking with the count.
