Sir Google Flange was a Muggle-born wizard who lived during the late sixteenth century and early seventeenth century. Being the eldest son of his baronet father, Flange was granted knighthood as one of the benefits of his father’s title. He attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and upon graduation decided that he wanted to be a healer. Flange tried and failed numerous times to create new remedies for magical diseases. According to various sources, he went through a period where his lack of successful experiments almost convinced him to quit being a healer. It wasn’t until much later that he realized the answer wasn’t to invent something new, but rather look towards the past. This led Flange to be well known for reviving ancient healing techniques that otherwise may have been left forgotten to the past.
One such ancient technique is depicted on his portrait: abracadabra written in the form of the triangle. This technique and the word “abracadabra” itself was first seen in 212 C.E. when the Roman healer, Quintus Serenus Sammonicus, prescribed 51 malaria patients with enchanted amulets that had this inscribed on the back. Sammonicus insisted that the inscription could cure even the most lethal of diseases. Flange wondered if this could be applicable to magical diseases as well and poured copious amounts of research into his hypothesis. His work on the subject later inspired Muggle Gnostics to use it to invoke spirits to fight diseases and misfortune.
