The Elder Wand was the unbeatable wand, and the only Hallow that Voldemort sought after. It, like all other wands, only switches to a new owner when its previous owner has been disarmed by the new owner. The core of the Elder Wand is thestral hair, and, as you can probably tell by the name, the wood it is made of is elder. According to the book A Simple Guide to the Creation of a Wand, which you can find in the Hogwarts Library, " Elder wandwood is known for its extremely powerful properties...It is rarely used because if the wand does backfire, it often will kill the wandmaker or wielder." That makes sense, as the Elder Wand is certainly extremely powerful. If the new master of the Elder Wand does not take the wand against the previous owner's will, it will perform as a normal wand would and not show its extraordinary powers. It was snapped in half by Harry Potter.
