Chapter 18

I scrambled to my feet. The fire didn't look like it was going towards me. I heard the Careers shout, "Look! There's a fire, and I'm betting that someone's around that area, too." Glimmer ran past my tree excitedly, pursued by the rest of the Career pack. I followed them towards the fire, because I was curious myself.

It took only a short amount of time to encounter the animals that lived in the area on fire, who were running away to another safe place where water was. Soon afterwards, I could see the wall of fire between the trees. Marvel yelled, "Look!" I looked to where he was pointing and saw a fireball fly through the air and land somewhere nearby. Another one landed right next to Glimmer, who jumped back, screaming. Clove smiled.

The Careers realized the danger and run back further, until they reached a spot where they could watch the fire, but not have it touch them. I decided to run, too. Spying on the Careers was informative, but I was almost caught multiple times. I run in the opposite direction of them. A fireball about the size of an orange whizzed by, and I realized how close I was to it. I heard a hiss, and I moved to the side quickly, but not quickly enough. I felt it brush against my arm, but I ignored the pain for now.

I started to back away, but the fire had been extinguished somehow, which meant someone must be nearby. Once I was far enough away not to be suffocated by smoke, I sat on a branch and ate some berries. I spent almost the rest of the day making a homemade slingshot, which worked pretty well. Once the sun started to go down and I was running out of my berries, I climbed down from the tree and started to look for a berry bush. I found a small clearing with a pond by it and I thought, "Water!" I almost run towards it until I see Katniss laying there, sleeping, with a burned calf that needed treatment.

Suddenly I heard footsteps and I ran. I heard Katniss behind me, waking up, and soon she started running in the same direction as me. I soon realized the Careers had Katniss and I surrounded. I didn't think anyone had noticed me yet, so I climbed up a tree quickly. They did notice Katniss, who scrambled up a tree right by me. I froze. I was trapped.
