Chapter 1
I woke up at the crack of dawn, stiffly, I got out of bed, and went to the bathroom, used it, (I won’t get into the details here…….) and went to the kitchen. Now you may think that this is gonna be one of those stories where the main character finds out that they have magical powers and gets shipped off to some fancy school by a giant dude (Got the reference, did you?) WRONG! I’m just a normal girl with an extraordinary appearance, I have this thing called Heterochromia iridium, it means I have two different colored eyes, yes, like a husky, most people have like, for example, two different brown eyes, not me, I have two COMPLETELY different eyes, one amber, one grey/blue, yes, I look pretty weird. You may think that I, having two different colored eyes, must be bullied at school? Well, no I’m not bullied, in fact, I’m ignored, even by the teachers, I am more like one of those background characters that you hear of maybe once or twice, in class the only time I am ever spoken to at school is when the teacher calls my name for attendance. Other than that, I just sit in the back and read, by the reference I bet you can figure out what I like to read, I’ll give you a minute to think, Did you figure it out? Yes? Ok on with the story! As I walk into the kitchen, I see that no one else is awake, so I walk down the hall and down the stairs into the basement, you see, our basement is a cool place to hang out in, only because my two younger sisters Olympia and Nike are scared of it, they believe its haunted, I may or may not have also played a part in it…… hehe hehe… Okay! I did! When I was younger, my friend Claire and I scared the living daylights out of them because they wouldn’t leave us alone, then she had to move, and last year she came back as a different person, she didn’t even remember me, but it’s ok, I don’t really want to be friends with her anymore, she's such a brat! Her parents spoiled her! Well, they did when we were younger too but back then, she didn’t like it. Now? Oh man, she is a COMPLETELY different person! I just remembered something! I never introduced myself! My name is Athene Bayliie, my mom is IN LOVE with all things Greek, as you can tell, and I’m in 6th grade, well, I’m GOING to be, right now it's summer, and next year I’m going to a private boarding school because my dad, who is a famous scientist, won a scholarship, and here I am, but the thing is, everyone at this school is really smart, and me? Nope! I have an IQ of 197, yes I was the smartest in my class last year, (not that anyone knew,) but still, I’m gonna be the dumb kid, everyone is gonna be smarter than me, but to cheer me up, my mom told me that the headmaster is putting in the special lights for my contact, I have a contact lens that I can put in my eye (obviously) and under this special kind of light it will look normal, when I wear it without that light, I just look scary, my sisters cried all night because they saw me with it in, the color of the contact is amber, my blue eye changes color depending on what I am wearing and my mood, and contacts can’t do that, so I got amber. I walk down the stairs into the basement, I flick on the light and sit on the couch, I look around for the TV remote and I find it under a cushion, I turn on the TV and go to turn on Netflix, I click on my profile and then go right to the show I was watching, Stranger Things. After a few episodes, I went back upstairs and into the kitchen. “Hello sweetie!” My mom says looking over her shoulder at me, she is at the stove, cooking something “Whatcha cookin’?” I say, curiously, “Your favorite,” “Which ‘favorite’ we talkin’ bout? My “favorite” or my favorite?” I ask “Your favorite.” “YASSSSSSS!” I say excitedly as my two sisters come down and out of their room, I think I forgot to mention, they are twins, they are almost identical, but they have their differences, like their hair, Nike has short neck length hair and Oli has shoulder-length hair, “Do you smell…?” Oli said “Oh, I smell…” Nike said “PANCAKES!!!!!” They shout together, After breakfast, my mom tells me that we are going to ‘Back-to-School’ shopping “NOOOOOOOOO!” I complain, “I DON'T WANT TO GOOOO!!!” “We are going, Ok?” My mom said through gritted teeth I groan as I walk into my room (It's the second biggest out of the whole house, my parent’s being the biggest, and my sisters Nike and Oli’s being the smallest, its mint green and my desk-nook is painted with sparkly emerald green paint, which, my mom painted herself, and in her words was “a pain in the a-” I can’t repeat that last word….. It was a pain in the butt because the paint was so thick. Anyway, I sat down at my desk and opened my computer, unpaused Spotify, and got to work, I LOVE writing, but I hate handwriting. I am in 6th grade, and STILL use a pencil grip, but it's only because of how I hold a pencil, it hurts my hand so I have to use one. So, I start writing my story, which is really an essay about me for the first day of school, even though its July and school doesn’t start till September, “Jom doghae nan Toxic, You hoghae I'm foxy” I sing, and if you can't understand it ok, I don’t either! And also probably because it's Korean, you see, I really like K-pop or some of it at least, my favorite band is BLACKPINK specifically, DDU-DU DDU-DU and How You Like That, and I can sing them pretty well, for someone who has zero knowledge on how to speak Korean. “ATHENE! Let’s GO!” My mom yells to me “COMING!” I shout back, quickly I change into a pair of ripped jeans and a Katy Perry tour shirt, I got it at the concert a few years ago. When we got to the mall my mom dragged me out of the car and to the door. “NOOOOOOOOOO!! YOU CAN’T MAKE ME!!!!!” “Yes, yes I can,” my mom said calmly “No Cheetos for a week” “NOOO! NOT MY CHEETOS!! FINE! I WILL GO IN!” I say, pouting. As I was being dragged through the stores at the mall I saw a girl my age wearing a hoodie that said ‘North Raincrest Academy’ That’s the school I’m going to! “Athene! ATHENE!” My mom says loudly to get my attention “Which dress do you like?” “The blue one,” I say smartly “What!? These are both green! Are you color blind?” she asks with a look of concern “No, it’s just I don't like either of them or dresses at all, “ I say as I walk away from the dresses and to the jeans, As I walk around the jeans I see a cute pair of ripped jeans and I grab them and look at the price Only $12!?!?! Weow! I walk to the tee-shirts and start looking through them when I noticed someone looking at me, it was the girl from earlier. “Can I help you?” I say not looking at her face “No, just looking,” She says in a sweet, but tough voice “What’s your name?” “Athene” I mumble “Sorry? What?” “Athene,” I say in a louder voice, “Oh, cool, my name is Nyah,” She said “Is that your school?” I say, my head still down, “Yeah, what school are you going to?” she asks, “and for the love of God! Would you please look at me while you speak!” I meet her gaze, her eyes are bright green, her skin is coffee-colored, and her hair is longer than her hips and black with strips of like a dark-ish yellow that looks gold. “Your eyes, they’re-” She starts, but I cut her off “Odd? Unnatural? Ugly?” I say fiercely, “NO!!- They're beautiful! I’ve never seen anyone's eyes like yours!” She says cheerfully “T-thanks,” I say, looking back down at the shirts, only one person had ever called my eyes beautiful before, “NYAH! WHERE DID YOU GO!?” Some lady yells out “Oops! That’s my mom! See you!” “WAIT!” I yell, she pauses “I'm also going to Rainsworth or whatever.” “Then I will see you at school,” she says as she walks away.
