Graciela Mina Choi was born in February 2004, the second daughter of Coraline and Daiki Choi. Her mother, Coraline, was of American and Japanese heritage. Her father, on the other hand, was of Korean and Japanese descent, making Grace mostly Japanese with a Korean surname. Four years before she was born, her parents gave birth to Grace's older sister, Giselle. Three years after Grace was born, her little sister Gabriella was born. When Grace was 8, her father died from a heart attack in his sleep, so she and her sisters were primarily raised by their mother and aunt, who moved in after Daiki's death.

One year before the death of her father, Grace's sister Giselle had begun her first year at Hogwarts. She had been sorted into Ravenclaw and was already one of the brightest students there. Everyone was ecstatic about Giselle's success! All except Grace, who was terrified of following in her sister's footsteps when she eventually had to go.

Three years after the incident, it was time for Grace to go to Hogwarts. Giselle was already in her fifth year, so her mother assured her that "Giselle will look after you". Grace was sorted into Hufflepuff, much to her family's dismay.
