Backstory

I turned 11 on a very stormy night. I heard my dad give one last peaceful breath, than his breaths turned into loud, fitful snores. I saw my mother lay her head down on a large book filled with muggle information, and close her eyes wearily. My dog, Gustav, was walking around the house quietly, like he knew not to wake my parents. Me and Gustav were the only ones awake. It's a tradition to me to stay up late the day before your birthday, wait till 12:01, then eat your pre-made birthday cake. This birthday was different. My mom had slept forgetting to make a cake, and my father was so busy that he didn't even bother trying to put up hilarious decorations like he always did. Seeing this when I tip-toed into the kitchen, I took some old, dry bread out of our almost-empty refrigerator, melted some cheese on it and pierced a candle through. It would have to work, I thought. My parents are tired so why wake them? It's no problem that they missed my birthday. A sparkling pain of remembrance shot through my heart, making me dizzy. At least I'll get my Hogwarts letter today, I whispered quietly, trying to cheer myself up and hoping to forget about today. I knew I never would forget but it was worth a try. Soon after I finished eating. I patted a sleepy Gustav on the head and went to go to sleep again, knowing that everything might be better once the owl carrying my letter comes.
