Backstory

Hi! My name is Tafari Headesly ("Heade" as in "read", not as in "head") and I am a Jamaican-American wizard! I'm really excited to finally be going to Hogwarts this year. As far as my backstory, I was born in Kingston, Jamaica to a muggleborn father and a "pureblood" witch mother, and I'm my mother's second child (my half-sister's a fully "pureblood" witch on both sides, old wizard families amirite?). In fact, my mother once alleged that our side of the family descends from Mama Whitehead, a witch who was a teacher and colleague of Annie Palmer, the infamous White Witch of Jamaica. Also alleged is the story that Whitehead used to take her skin off and fly around my mother's district of Sligoville as a "jumbee", an extremely frightening transfiguration(?) known around the Caribbean (yikes) and made habit of scaring muggle travelers by appearing to them as a "rolling calf", a malevolent, bull-like magical creature that many Jamaicans know from scary stories told to us as children. Luckily, my grandmother's side of the family are (mostly) good witches and wizards, with the occasional rebel here and there, though the same can't be said for my grandaunts and her children (avoid at ALL COSTS). Anyway enough of that backstory, and on to more recent backstory! You see, about one-third of the witches and wizards on my mom's side are great Seers, gifted with prophetic dreams and visions, including my mom and my sister. I however am not (thus far) a Seer of any note, and hope to never become one after seeing how the "gift" has impacted my family's life, especially my mom's. Of course that doesn't mean I won"t study my butt of to pass my Divinations classes, I just don't plan on using my gifts if and when they emerge. My mom and sister are also quite talented when it comes to the study of ancient runes and potions, although my sister's more of a prodigy in the latter. My dad, on the other hand, is a gifted historian, and really, really good at Muggle Studies. In fact he's going to the Institute of Advanced Magical Studies to earn his Masters in Fairy Tale and Folklore studies (wish him luck!). Funny thing about my parents, they both actually met and graduated together from the same wizarding school, the Jamaican Academy of Sorcery Studies in Montego Bay (source: https://asheathes.tumblr.com/post/110217040720/wizarding-schools-around-the-world-jamaicathe) and they even graduated together. They reconnected years after when my mom was working as a probation officer for Kingston's Auror Bureau and while my dad was teaching at a muggle secondary school. They started dating, had me and got married later that same year, and a year after that we all moved to NYC. I grew up in the Bronx in a neighborhood filled with Caribbean muggles and wizards alike. I did actually get an offer when I turned eleven to go to Ilvermorny (via my dad's online WizMail account), but as immigrants my parents cautioned me to get to know the larger, more prominent muggle side of the country well before embarking properly on my magical education. As such I went to a muggle middle and high school (and met a few other wizard kids, quite a few of which were actually in a similar position!) and I now attend a muggle college. As for why I'm studying in Hogwarts now (as a mature student)? My college actually recently founded a program (which many other colleges have by the way, mine was just slow in getting it started as usual) where students of magical heritage are allowed to travel on the floo network and take the same courses offered to juvenile students in ways that fit our courseloads and schedules (so yeah, still seven years lol). As far as my plans for the future, I'm actually studying at Hogwarts in hopes of one day becoming a healer, and if not that than either a mediwizard or a potioneer, and if neither of those, then at least a really good student! I'm really looking forward to making friends, and I'm excited to begin my studies at Hogwarts! Oh also i'm like 20 and psyched to be sorted into Ravenclaw!!!
