My life long passion has always been animals.. I think you can guess why..

All of my life I have been laughed at and judged for my odd appearance by muggles, mudbloods, witches and wizards alike. I was never able to feel accepted until my 10th birthday.

My mother and father, both the only magical person from their respective families, were never the wealthy type. They valued experiences and happy moments more than they valued money. For that, I am eternally grateful. When my 10th birthday was coming around, they each asked me what I wanted most. I always told them the same thing, "I don't know.."

The day before my birthday had come and my parents were getting worried that I would have no gift to wake up to in the morning. My mother and father sat me down and tried asking one more time. "Sweetheart, what would you like to wake up to tomorrow for your birthday?" I sat in the chair across from them, staring at the floor. Just then, I had an odd thought. I never knew what I wanted for any of my birthdays, until now.

I looked up at my mother and father and gave them a soft smile, tears forming in my eyes. "I.. I want a friend.." Mother and father looked at me, then at each other. Mother looked back at me and smiled. "If it's a friend you want darling, then you shall have one."

The next day, I woke up to the smell of mother's famous breakfast potato pie. Stomach rumbling, I jumped out of bed and raced to the kitchen to find mother pulling the pie out of the oven. She turns and smiles at me as I take a seat at the kitchen table. "Happy birthday, my love" she says, kissing the top of my head and putting a large slice of pie in front of me. "Thank you mother," I say as I grab a large fork and devour the pie slice. I look around the kitchen, feeling that something is missing. "Where is father?" Mother gave a giggle and said, "He will be along shortly. He had a very important errand to run today."

About an hour or so went by and father still was not home. "Mother, I'm worried about father.." Since the day that I was born, father and mother had always been together; we were always together. Mother laid a hand on top of my head and said, "Don't worry, darling. He won't be much longer now."

After another 20 minutes, I heard a soft pop from outside the front door. Mother looked at me and smiled. "Well go on dear, don't keep your father waiting." My eyes grew wide with excitement. I threw open the front door and there, standing in the meadow was my father holding a strange box. He set the box down before giving me the biggest hug I have ever received. "Happy birthday, my little Teddi bear."

Father gently pushed the box toward me and said, "Go on, open her up." I stared at the box for a minute. It wasn't just the chains around the box that was making me nervous.. It was the small smoke rings I saw coming out of the small holes. I looked up at my father, but all he did was nod and smile. I cautiously removed the chains from on top of the box and started to slide the lid off. A soft squeal emerged from the box. I look up at my father, smiling from ear to ear. I take the lid off the box completely and put my hand inside to grab the small creature. Pulling my hand from the box, the first thing about this creature that caught my eye was its glittering, multicolored eyes.

"That species is known as the Antipodean Opaleye." My father's eyes were smiling as he gently stroked the baby dragon on its head. "What will you name him?" I sat on the grass, thinking harder than I ever have before. When I glanced over at the dragon in my arms, I noticed that he was staring directly into my eyes. Mesmerized, I met his gaze and could not look away. And then.. it hit me. "What would you like to be called, little one?" The dragon squeaked, a smoke ring emerging from his small mouth. Giggling, I hug the small dragon and say, "Well, that's a lovely name!" My father looked at me, questioning. I look at father and say, "He said that his name is Nyre."
