Backstory
Early Years/Family
Calum is a muggle-born from Inverness, with three siblings. His younger brother and sister are twins. His oldest brother has a son, and Calum happily spoils his nephew whenever he gets the chance. Only Calum and his sister possessed any magical ability, and no one in the direct family is really sure how this might have happened. His parents always tried to be proactive with Calum and the others when it came to their schooling. For the most part, though, it was up to Calum to make his own entertainment and he was free to do what he wanted a lot of the time, as long as his chores and homework were finished. As such, he got up to a little bit of trouble from time to time, mostly for backtalking or getting into fights with other children at the park. He was fiercely protective of his younger siblings, and still is.
Education
Calum went to a muggle primary school in Inverness and his parents, not wanting him to go away to boarding school for a long period of time, almost didn't let him go to Hogwarts. However, they eventually decided it would be for the best if he learned how to control the abilities he had, and associate with children who shared the same gifts. This paved the way for his younger sister to also attend Hogwarts a few years after him, where he kept a close eye on her and took on more of a parental role in making sure she was doing what she was supposed to. This helped him become a lot more mature, but he still liked to engage in the odd prank on his dormmates when the mood struck him. After Hogwarts, he went on to study at a muggle university, and trained to become a teacher, but he wasn't quite ready to settle down into his professional life yet.
Career
After university, Calum took a position in a primary school near Edinburgh for a few years, and then he travelled to the USA and taught in elementary and middle schools for three years. Unfortunately, he had to return home to the UK shortly before his visa expired, as his dad was unwell. He took a few months out of work to help his parents and, once his dad was back on his feet, he set his sights to getting back to teaching. His sister, who works in Hogsmeade, informed him that Hogwarts were looking for a professor.
