Backstory

> Cypress came to Hogwarts more out of necessity than choice.
> After their father left on a "work trip" and disappeared, their mother became overtaken by grief while trying to continue working for a livelihood. She began to neglect Cypress, whose Muggle school counselor eventually referred them to a social worker.
> As it turned out, the social worker overseeing Cypress' case was also an Auror who infiltrated Muggle law enforcement to investigate suspected Dark wizards. As the Auror worked with Cypress, they realized the unruly teenager had a few hidden secrets (of a magial kind). The Auror may or may not have put in a recommendation to the Hogwarts headmaster for Cypress to join, despite their previous disqualification for admission, and Cypress was belatedly admitted.
> No one, Muggle or wizard, knows who Cypress' father was or what became of him. As for their mother... well, people have said she used to be a Ravenclaw, but something must've made her decide to abandon magic altogether. She believes Cypress is attending a private school on scholarship. Both mother and child are happy enough with the convenient arrangement.
